Advent 2016: First Week of Advent

First Candle - purple candle

The first candle of Advent has been traditionally called the “prophecy candle.” It represents hope and expectation because throughout the prophets they continually held forth the hope of a coming Messiah.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light… For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:2, 6

Why is the coming Messiah hope? Because as Isaiah later proclaimed: “he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:4-5

This child has come to die. And through his death we will receive life. This is our hope.
